Visible Voice-Established - in 2006 by Vincent O’Brien, Principal Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Cumbria, Visible Voice is an international network of researchers, community groups and activists with an interest in using visual media for collaborative research and community development.

CDI Digital - Inclusion in Disadvantaged Communities

CIACAC, a tiny NGO that runs a children´s education initiative, is from a favela in this northern zone. An amazing, self-educated mother of two, Neuza Nascimento chose to give up the security of a well-paying job in order to open up her own house in her community Parque Jardim Beira Mar so that children have another recreational option besides playing in the street – their own safe space to play, discover, grow and question. Now in operation for nearly eight years, she struggles with the help of kind donations and contributions as well as local and international volunteers to give these children workshops in rights and citizenship, English, Art and Capoeira, as well as go on excursions and camps.
UMPMRS (Union of Women for the Betterment of Roupa Suja) is a community run non-governmental not for profit organization located in the neighborhood of Roupa Suja, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Rocinha, the largest favela in Latin America. UMPMRS’s mission is to improve the quality of life for the children and families living in the community of Roupa Suja.
Catalytic Communities - CatComm was founded in 2000 with the mission to develop, inspire, and empower a global network of communities generating and sharing solutions. The seeds of our platform for community solutions took root soon after our founding, and we have carefully grown as a hub of community efforts across the globe. During the last decade, we launched a series of virtual and material projects designed to facilitate information-sharing and, as a result, we are leading the effort to create a broadly distributed, public platform for the social change commons.
The Skoll Foundation - The Skoll Foundation drives large-scale change by investing in, connecting, and celebrating social entrepreneurs and other innovators dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing problems. Social entrepreneurs are proven leaders whose approaches and solutions to social problems are helping to better the lives and circumstances of countless underserved or disadvantaged individuals.
Sun Catchers Project - Sun Catchers Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supplying developing countries with the ability to use solar technology to cook food and boil water. Initially, the Sun Catchers Project will be focusing on supplying orphanages, schools and hospitals in Africa with village sized solar ovens capable of cooking 1200 meals a day and 60 loaves of bread an hour.

Viramundo, a Brazilian, non-governmental, community health organisation. Viramundo is committed to work with the urban poor and migrant groups (internal and refugees) living in Rio de Janeiro. Viramundo provides health education services and projects, very basic health care, training, and community development support aiming to improve the health and well being of disadvantaged groups in Brazil.
Developing Minds Foundation is a non-profit organization that builds schools and supports education programs in areas affected by violence and poverty such as urban slums, favelas and regions of armed conflict.
Instituto Reacao - Reaction Institute, organized by Judo champion Flavio Canto. Classes offered free to residents in Rocinha and other favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Classes included are jiu jitsu, judo, reforca escolar (homework club), and citizenship.
Viva Rio – Brazilian NGO, based in Rio de Janeiro. Its main goal is to promote a culture of peace and social development through field work, research and formulation of public policies; particularly focused on poverty, crime and armed violence in urban areas.
